As a humanist I believe in the responsibility to serve the underprivileged, both locally and abroad. After college I worked for two and a half years as a Spanish medical interpreter at an orthopedic surgery clinic in Denver. I collaborated with a social worker to help patients not only with their medical problems, but also with the financial and social challenges they faced. Helping our patients overcome these challenges was extremely rewarding. Serving as a medical volunteer for Health Horizons International will allow me to utilize the skills I learned to help bring primary care and public health care to impoverished villages in the Puerto Plata region of the Dominican Republic.
